1. Ranthambore An adventurous stay in a jungle

This year had been an exciting year, not only I got to see two National parks in distinct  parts of India, (Read:Bandipur) but also in two discrete terrains with different adventure altogether. I was never a person who would enjoy watching these wild beasts in their natural habitat, but these two trips certainly changed my perspective. Perhaps it had to do with the fact that I was in a land where the rules were different, where a day was marked with sunrise and sunset. Perhaps it came from the knowledge that the survival is only of the fittest. Whatever the reason, the very sight of an animal in its own territory, on its own terms, makes for a breathtaking moment and can change your perspective forever.

There is something so mystical and exciting about being in a forest that for many of us, a visit to the wilderness ranks as one of our best holiday experiences. For the wildlife adventure enthusiasts, Ranthambore National Park in the Sawai Madhopur district of Rajasthan is a perfect destination. Known to be one of the best parks to spot the majestic Indian Tigers, the park is also the home to several other endangered species. (Read: Rajasthan Wildlife Tour Package)

Birds: Asian Paradise Flycatcher, Common Kingfisher, Cormorant, Indian Pitta, Painted Stork, Rufous Treepie, Stork-billed Kingfisher, White-breasted Water hen, Sandpiper, Jacana, vultures, fowls and many more.

Animals: Crocodiles, Jungle Hare, Sambar Deer, Spotted Deer, Wild Boar, leopards, hyenas, blue bulls or neel gais, jackals, civet cats etc.

If you and your partner are inclined towards the nature or the fascinating wildlife, you must plan your honeymoon in Ranthambore National Park. The enthralling wildlife safaris, tracing the beasts and moments in the luxury camps will surely make it for an amazing honeymoon trip.

    Just the bare necessities

Travelling in the wilderness requires a special sensitivity. The laws of the jungle are different but there are several ways to get the best out of your trip without disturbing the natural habitats that you visit. Some tips that you can use from those who’ve been there:
    • Dress in muted forest colours like greens, browns, beige and dull browns. Avoid orange, red, pink and bright prints.
    • Wear comfortable walking shoes and don’t forget hat and sunglasses. High boots with socks are a sensible option for jungle walks. Always check your shoes before you wear them for creepy crawlies like scorpions.
    •  Try not to talk too much or make loud sounds while journeying into the jungle.
    •   Do not get too close to the animals and do not ever attempt to feed them.
    •  It is important to have your own survival kit, such as a torch with extra batteries, basic      medicines, salt for leeches and other toiletries.
    •   Dress according to the season. An outdoor jacket is necessary in winters. While it can be quite warm in the day, evenings can get cold.
    •  Take some nuts/biscuits to nibble (especially for the early morning safari) and water.

How to book your Ranthambore Trip
You can either plan your own trip or leave it to wildlife experts. Booking through a travel agent or a wildlife expert may cost you more but then you have the comfort of being in the hands of professionals who personally travel to Ranthambore (and other such places) several times a year, can assign you guides knowledgeable about the region’s flora and fauna, and know the local and administrative people and processes very well. Click here to book this tour
Wildlife Safari in Ranthambore National Park

There are two types of vehicles permitted in Ranthambhore National Park, the Jeep and the Canter. The Jeep is a six seater open-top vehicle, and the first choice for many. Demand for Jeeps is very high, and so we recommend that you book at least 60 days in advance to guarantee a Jeep safari. The Canter is a 16 seat open-top bus - its elevated seats mean that you can see far into the jungle ahead, further than a Jeep would allow. While the canter is a lot cheaper, I recommend a jeep as it gives more flexibility to pause-stop-go.

There are loads of things to do in Ranthambhore besides the safari park. In particular, I would highly recommend a guided tour of Ranthambhore Fort. The locals visit the fort to worship at the famous Ganesh Temple, which lies within. The fort will enhance and complete any visit to Ranthambhore National Park.

  3. When I first thought of writing on the subject – Offbeat Destinations in India, I had somewhat structured my blog in my mind - picking one place from every corner of incredible India that I have visited, writing about it; Keeping it simple without making it too lengthy.  But as I started writing today, there was this incessant rain outside my huge French windows overlooking the Jaipur city.  I hoped to get drenched in the rain, fill my lungs with the pleasing moisture-heavy breeze and inhale the smell of wet earth. The monsoons in Rajasthan are laden with an indescribable feeling of joy. The earth bursts into shades of green, the aroma of bhutta pakoras (Corn dumplings) waft out of every house, the immense relief from the hot summer is visible on every face. And as I was doing so, I felt torn. On one hand, I wanted to write about the beautiful coastline of Gokarna near Goa and on the other, I wanted to tell the tales of experiencing the joy of rain in the desert terrain of Rajasthan. I wanted as much to write about my favorite Leh cafes, as I wanted to write about along the Living Root Bridges of Mawlynnong or about taking a boat ride in the cleanest river against the stunning beauty of Dawki in Meghalaya. I had made up my mind and without any further delay I quickly browsed through my travel memoirs and took out one particular Holiday in Rajasthan I did a few months ago.

Every time we think of Rajasthan, the very first destinations that catch up our fancy are Jaipur, Jaisalmer, Jodhpur and Udaipur. For those like me who have already visited these touristy places and looking to explore the state a little more, you will find that there are many offbeat destinations in Rajasthan that can give you a flavor of everything that Rajasthan is famous for – magnificent palaces, abandoned forts, elephants, camels,  and of course sumptuous desi food. These places promise charm, tradition, history, culture, immense beauty and serenity minus the chaos that overwhelms most of the famous tourist places.

My itinerary was: Delhi – Amanbagh (Ajabgarh) – Jaipur – Deogarh – Rawla Narlai (Narlai) – Kumbhalgarh -- Udaipur

I will skip writing about Delhi, Jaipur and Udaipur because a lot much have been spoken about these places in the past. For more information on these places click on the respective links

    Amanbagh

Amanbagh is a little hectic drive from Delhi (over 5 hrs including breaks) but you reach a place so gorgeous and exquisite that just the sight of it makes up for the long and tiring drive😌😤. It suits perfect for travellers seeking top notch luxury near Jaipur (being only 2 hrs from Jaipur).

I’m going to let these pictures speak their thousand words:

    luxury property Amanbagh
    Amanbagh Resort, Ajabgarh

The sandstone and pink marble palace is designed with every possible contemporary comfort in mind, comprising of 24 Haveli Suites and 16 Pool Pavilions situated in lush gardens around the main swimming pool.

Offering cool respite from Rajasthan’s hot weather, the 33-metre swimming pool is centered within the resort’s gardens. Light meals and snacks are available poolside throughout the day.

    Courtyard of Amanbagh Resort

The countryside surrounding Amanbagh reveals the ruins of an ancient empire. I also did a brief excursion to Bhangarh. Bhangarh is famed to be one of the most haunted places in the world.

Opulent furnishings, larger than life rooms and exquisitely decorated interiors speak volumes about this marvelous edifice called Amanbagh. A stay at the hotel guarantees you a trip back to a by-gone Moghul era.

From Amanbagh, my next stoppage was Jaipur. It was an absolute culinary delight to be in Jaipur. But I will not get into this now, maybe in my future posts.

    Deogarh

Deogarh Mahal, a luxury heritage resort in Rajasthan
    Deogarh Mahal

The ease of accessibility and distance from the major cities of Rajasthan makes Deogarh a convenient choice for offbeat travellers like me. Deogarh can conveniently fit in any itinerary of Rajasthan being only 135 kms from Udaipur and 150 kms from Jodhpur. However it was a whopping 275 kms from Jaipur, (farthest for me😪). You can break this journey by halting a night in Ajmer or Pushkar. I have been to Pushkar umpteen times and decided to give it a miss.

Deogarh Mahal, a fort and a luxury heritage hotel is dominant in this otherwise small and quaint village.  Deogarh Mahal continues to be owned by the erstwhile rulers of the region; a part of the building still houses members of the royal family while another part has been converted to a heritage hotel. The family personally supervises the hotel which is evident in their hospitality standards. The Rooms are lovely, unique and are fully-equipped with modern facilities with around the clock room service. Each wall, staircase and piece of art has a story to tell. One can experience the exotic murals, stunning architecture and bask in the sunlight on one of the numerous balconies that are spread throughout the palace. I was spoilt with options of partaking ayurvedic massages or floating in the swimming pool or just lazing around in the jacuzzi. A peaceful library, an indoor gym and tennis courts are also available. In the evening, I feasted on delicious Mewari cuisine cooked with fresh local produce, while enjoying authentic and live cultural performances. Old world charm, luxury and modern amenities topped with warm and hospitable staff, what else could one ask for. It’s a place I just didn’t want to leave.

I also enjoyed an hour and half ride through the mountains past British era tunnels and bridges, aboard the historic meter gauge train. One also has an option to drive around the rural countryside in vintage cars.

    Rawla Narlai.. A Heritage Resort

Rawla Narlai, a quaint retreat in the tiny hidden town of Narlai, was my next destination just 70 km from Deogarh and around 30 kms before Ranakpur. It is a 17th century fortress converted into a heritage resort. Surrounded by beautiful hillocks and lovely temples, it has a unique rustic charm.

Unique dining experience - Stepwell Dinner at Rawla Narlai
    Stepwell Dinner at Rawla Narlai

The step-well dinner which the hotel organizes is incredibly romantic. The step well is lit by hundreds of lamp spreading their light under the star-studded sky. It was something that transported me back in an ancient Rajasthan. I recommend booking this experience in advance.

The resort also arranges leopard safari to catch a glimpse of the elusive big cats.

    Kumbhalgarh

    Kumbhalgarh Fort
    Kumbhalgarh Fort

Just about 50 kilometres from Narlai stands the highest, most formidable and an almost invincible fort of Rajasthan. The glorious Kumbhalgarh Fort is one of those places where one can witness the power and strength of the Rajput rulers during the medieval period. Interestingly, its walls extend for a whopping 36 kms, making it one of the largest walled complexes in the world. The mere size of the fort talks volumes about it. Despite being 700 years old, Kumbhalgarh Fort is still intact and in good shape, truly making it one of the hidden gems of Rajasthan.

36 kms long walled Kumbhalgarh Fort

    Kumbhalgarh Fort - Offbeat Destination
Why Kumbhalgarh fort was never conquered becomes obvious once you set eyes on it.!

    Tip:
    • It is a long and tedious climb up steep slopes and stairs and is not very advisable for people with knee problem or problem in walking.
    • Don’t miss the sound and light show at the fort in the evening (preferably watch an evening before taking a tour of this huge monument to really understand and appreciate the history of the fort).
Kumbhalgarh Wildlife Sanctuary can be seen from atop the walls of this great fort. It is known to shelter many endangered species of wildlife. One can take a jeep safari to see leopards, panthers, hyenas, wolves, crocodiles, wild boars, bears etc. Although I wasn’t lucky enough to spot even half of the above list :(

Hotel recommendation: I stayed at the Fateh Safari Lodge. Other good hotels are - The Aodhi and Mahua Bagh.  These all varies with respect to the budget, taste & offered services.

Finally I ended my trip in Udaipur. Enroute Udaipur I took a short detour to visit the famous Ranakpur Jain Temples in Ranakpur.

If I have inspired enough then you can book this tour here.

  4. Sri Lanka (formerly Ceylon) is an island nation south of India in the Indian Ocean. It's diverse landscapes range from rain forest and arid plains to highlands and sandy beaches. It’s famed for its ancient Buddhist ruins, including the 5th-century citadel Sigiriya, with its palace and frescoes. The city of Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka's ancient capital, has many ruins dating back more than 2,000 years.

Some Popular Tourist Friendly Places in Sri Lanka

    KANDY
The only other real 'city' in Sri Lanka, other than Colombo, is the easy-going capital of the Hill Country and has a lot to offer - history, culture, forested hills and a touch of urban buzz. Only 115km inland from the capital, climatically it is a world away due to its 500meters altitude.

    BENTOTA
Beach is one of the best on the west coast, protected from Galle Road by the broad sweep of the Bentota Ganga. While it is dominated by big package hotels, it also has a number of smaller places catering to independent travelers.

    COLOMBO
Sri Lanka's capital, biggest city and major port, draws together all the colors and cultures that make up this island nation, condenses them into a patchwork of markets, gardens and buildings both humble and grand, and knocks them against a narrow slab of beachfront.

  5. Luxury Holiday in Rajasthan

Rajasthan was earlier called Rajputana meaning the country of the Rajputs. Later after India gained independence in 1947 all its princely states integrated into India one after the other and the state was names as Rajasthan which means the Abode of the Rajas (Kings).

Many of the palaces and forts build by the erstwhile kings were later converted into Museums or touristic forts which are now loved by tourists who are fascinated when they know about the history of those forts or palaces. Many of these establishments were also converted into Heritage Hotels which are now considered as one of the best hotel in the world.

Below itinerary gives you an experience to stay in such hotels and experience the ‘Maharaja Lifestyle’. The itinerary also covers visit to many other forts and palaces in the cities covered.

Overnight at LAXMI NIWAS PALACE which was commissioned by His Highness Sir Ganga Singh Ji, the former Maharaja of Bikaner in 1904.

  8. There is something so mystical and exciting about being in a forest that for many of us, a visit to the wilderness ranks as one of our best holiday experiences. Perhaps it has to do with the fact that we are in a land where the rules are different, where a day is marked with sunrise and sunset. Perhaps it comes from the knowledge that the survival is only of the fittest. Whatever the reason, the very sight of an animal in its own territory, on its own terms, makes for a breathtaking moment and can change your perspective forever.

Like any other typical Indian, who only take a holiday or two annually, deciding the perfect holiday destination was not an easy task for me and my husband. We were clear from the very beginning that we wanted to take up a wildlife tour of India along with some scenic and cultural experiences.  With options like Ranthambore in Rajasthan or Bandavgarh in Madhya Pradesh or umpteen other wildlife national parks in India which are probably better connected what made us choose this lesser known North East India Tour? Besides, there are many other celebrated places that we had not been to, then why Shillong and Cherrapunjee in Meghalaya. I rejoice having made that choice. Some pictures of my tour:

The north-eastern part of India is largely an unexplored land. With handful of population and several remote regions, the seven states of the north-east haven’t really caught travelers’ fancy. However, if you are ready to explore, there is a world of surprises waiting for you in this part of the country. From fantastic treks to lush jungles, natural caves and much more, there is so much to do and experience in the north-east.

Kaziranga National Park is situated in the Indian state of Assam. The park is known as the abode of rhinoceros. . A World Heritage Site, the picturesque reserve gives shelter to almost two-thirds of the total population of world's Great One-horned Rhinoceroses on Earth.

There are three tourist routes that you can opt for inside Kaziranga, and you can go in either for a Jeep safari Tour in Kaziranga or an elephant safari Tour in Kaziranga. The safari almost assures you of an unforgettable glimpse of Kaziranga’s spectacular wildlife.
A lot of travellers frequently ask about the reopening date of the Kaziranga National park after the monsoons. The official date for the reopening of the park is from 1st of November onwards. The park, safaris and forest treks remain closed until then.

The itinerary that I took up gave me immense time at each location without making the trip too hectic and tiring. It takes most people 7 days to experience this part of North east India, but there’s every reason to make the journey last longer ;)

The itinerary is copy pasted below:

    Some Tips Finally

    • Guides in Kaziranga: The forest guard who travels with you in your vehicle in the park doubles as a guide.
    • It is important to have your own survival kit, such as a torch, medicines, and toiletries. An outdoor jacket is necessary in winters. While it can be quite warm in the day, evenings can get cold.
    • Double Decker Living Root Bridge in Cherrapunjee is a must trek. Minimum 6 - 7 hours depending upon the amount of time you want to spend on the bridge. Leave as early as possible in the morning as it gets dark early in the evening (by 5 PM it starts getting dark). Also, in order to fit this in your itinerary you need to take a night’s halt at Cherrapunjee.

  10. A short trip to Amritsar, Dalhousie and Dharamshala (6 Nights and 7 days)

    Dalai Lama's residence at Dharamshala
    Dharamshala, India
Whether it's the incessant spinning of Buddhist prayer wheels, the splendour of the surrounding mountains, or simply the divine presence of His Holiness the Dalai Lama (who holds public lectures few times in a year), this largest Tibetan enclave outside of Tibet, at Dharamsala draws seekers of spiritual enlightenment from all over the world.

The natural beauty of Dharamsala's snow-capped mountains and mist-soaked valley can be well compared with that of any of Himachal's best-loved resort towns, and for those not single-mindedly wrapped up in a quest for spiritual fine-tuning with Buddhist lectures and meditation courses, this is an ideal base for walks and treks into the Dhauladhar range. Once you’ve restored your spiritual energy, enjoy a picturesque stroll to Bhagsu Waterfall or climb the hill to Triund to bask in stunning views of the Himalayas. It's also a good place to simply experience a toned-down India at a more leisurely pace.

The hillside town of Dharamshala stretches along a spur of the Dhauladhar mountain range and is divided into two very distinct parts -- Lower Dharamsala and McLeod Ganj (often called Little Lhasa).

Recommended no. of days in Dharamshala for a tourist: 2 days
Best buys in Dharamshala: Tibetan carpets and handicrafts, statuettes, sleeping bags, fruit preserves, bottled produce
Essentials to be carried along for Dharamshala Tour: Light woollens for summers and heavy for winters (November-March).Carry extra pairs of shoes if you are planning to go for hikes or adventure sports. The organizers provide most other gear.

    Dalhousie
    Lake Chamera near Dalhousie Pics
View of Chamera lake near Dalhousie India in the Chamba region
    Waterfall near Dalhousie India

As a hill station, Dalhousie is something that really does not make you awestruck. It does not have the exotic charm of Dharamshala , nor the grandeur of Darjeeling. Nor does it have a picturesque lake setting like Ladakh, nor unlike Nainital. But if you are idea of a vacation is just lazing around, taking leisurely walks, watching sun set, smelling the flowers and being totally laid back, Dalhousie is the best place for sure. In a way, Dalhousie is a place for those who are looking for freshness, peace and a break away from the noise, pollution and overcrowded metro life. With its lush pine trees, and the towering peaks of the Himalayas surrounding it, Dalhousie Tour is perfect for nature lovers.

    Tip
    • Please carry an umbrella or raincoat to protect from getting drenched.
    • The more adventurous can use Dalhousie as a base camp for the treks to Kalatop and Khajjiar. The nearest point is Pathankot Railway Jn, which is connected by Rail to most of the cities in India.

    Dalhousie Tourist attraction
Churches, Panjpulla, Bakrota hills, Hikes, day excursion to Khajjiar and Chamba area.
Best time to visit Dalhousie (High & peak months) : April-June (cool retreat) & mid September-October & mid December to  February (to experience snow fall)
Recommended no. of days for a tourist in Dalhousie: 2
Best buys: Carpets, bags & shawls, Chamba rumals (handkerchiefs)
Essentials to be carried along: Light woollens for summers and heavy ones for winters (December-February), sun screens.

    Amritsar
    Golden Temple Tour photos
Early Morning in the Golden Temple, Amritsar

Amritsar is home to Sikhism’s holiest Shrine - The Golden Temple that serves as a spiritual center for the World’s entire Sikh population. The renowned Golden Temple is actually just a small part of this huge gurdwara complex, known to Sikhs as Harmandir Sahib. The fabric of the city seems to be woven around this temple. The way in which its devotees worship is enough to hold your attention and interest. There is a strange good feeling once you enter its sacred premises. Clean and peaceful, the temple is both fascinating and spiritually reviving.

Being one of the most advanced yet traditional cities in Punjab, Amritsar is also one of the best places to taste the delicious Punjabi food and for shopping. Along with big brands, there are shops that sell items made in different corners of Punjab and brought to Amritsar.

A tour to Amritsar remains incomplete without witnessing the flag retreat or the lowering of the flags ceremony held early evening daily just 30 km from Amritsar on India Pakistan Wagah border. It is a thrillingly pompous display of military bravado and attracts countless tourists both Indian as well as foreigners every day. It is one of the most delightful and fun modern-day events you'll ever get around to witness in India.

Location:  Wagah is at the border between India and Pakistan, 32km (20 miles) from Amritsar
Hours: You need to arrive at the border at least 30 min. before the ceremony commences (around 6pm)
    Transportation: Round-trip taxi Rs 950-Rs 1,500; Rs 450 by auto-rickshaw
Other: No bags of any sort are permitted into the border area -- leave them in your room or you'll waste time trying to find a locker facility. Bring your passport to speed up your entry to the "special seating" area reserved for guests and foreigners.
