Jaipur Literature Festival 2015
An outsider who has never been part of the Jaipur Literature
Festival wonders what goes on for five days in the Diggi Palace, a 16th century
palace part of which has been turned into heritage hotel in Jaipur, Rajasthan. The
entire venue transforms into a carnival of writers, poets, authors,
journalists, publishers, celebrities and socialites all under the same roof.
Yes, it is that time of the year when the world’s greatest free literary
show is held in Jaipur. From Nobel laureates to local language writers, Man Booker
prize winners to debut novelists, this January (21 to 25 January 2015), the
most remarkable, witty, sensitive and brilliant collection of authors will come
together for five days of readings, debates and discussions at the beautiful
Diggi Palace in the Rajasthani capital.
Some popular names to grace the festival this year include- Nobel
Laureate Sir. V. S. Naipaul, 2013 Man Booker Prize Winner Eleanor Catton,
acclaimed novelist Hanif Kureishi, celebrated American travel writer Paul
Theroux, Chetan Bhagat, Javed Akthar, Elizabeth Gilbert (of Eat, Pray, Love
fame), Kamila Shamsie, Bettany Hughes, Christina Lamb, Neel Mukherjee (Booker
Prize nominee) and William Pinch among a host of other acclaimed writers.
A typical day during the fest starts with four or five different
sessions on varied issues running parallel in four or five different venues on
the same ground followed by lunch and the same continues even after that. Later
in the evening interactive workshops and live music sessions are held to
entertain the attendees.
