Snow or no snow the skiers can now zoom down the alpine slopes of Solang valley and test their endurance in the green heights.
With its foray into the adventure sport of Grass Skiing, Himachal Pradesh will very soon be an all time skiing destination. It will be the first Indian site to offer this adventure activity. Grass skiing was invented by Richard Martin in Germany in 1966. It was created initially as a training method for skiers before the winter season. Grass skiing is now a well recognized international sport and has a world cup too!
Solang Valley or Solang Nullah, 13 km north from the oversubscribed tourist destination of Manali, was until now known for its snow skiing slopes. Atal Bihari Vajpayee Institute of Mountaineering and Allied Sports (ABVIMAS) at Manali is hopeful to begin the activity by August – September this year. The required equipments have been procured from Europe and the thick variety of grass has been planted at this 250 ft long and 30 ft wide patch. The period between July to November is considered the best for this sport, when quality green grass is there.The good news is that the authorities plan to keep it inexpensive to lure the budget travelers also.
